June 165 AD - Justin Martyr, the Christian Apologist, was believed to have been martyred for his faith on this date.
800th anniversary
November 1215 - The fourth Lateran Council was convoked. It promulgated the the doctrine of Transubstantiation which claims that the substance of the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ, with only the appearances of bread and wine remaining. Thomas Aquinas later expanded upon this doctrine firmly establishing it as part of Romish teaching.
450th anniversary
September 1565 - Pedro Menendez massacred all the French Huguenots at St. Johns River, Florida. The bodies of the victims were hung in trees with the inscription: Hanged, not as Frenchmen, but as heretics.
150th anniversary
May 1865 - Hudson Taylor founded the China Inland Mission. It later became known as Overseas Missionary Fellowship (OMF) International.
July 1865 - William Booth founded the organisation that became known as The Salvation Army.
100th anniversary
January 1915 - Mary Slessor, the famed Scottish missionary to Nigeria, died.
February 1915 - Fanny Crosby, the renowned hymnwriter, died. She wrote somewhere in the region of 8,000 hymns.
50th anniversary
May 1965 - Henry Halley died in Chicago, Illinois. He authored the well-known Halley’s Bible Handbook.
