What is an Evangelical?

Sidlow Baxter is especially known for his epic work entitled "Explore the Book", which is a comprehensive overview of the Bible.

In another of his published writings he makes mention of what an Evangelical is. He indicated that he was happy to be identified as an Evangelical in distinction to all too many leaders in the organised church who doubt or deny precious tenets of our historic Christian Faith.

By using the term "Evangelical" Sidlow Baxter indicated that those who do so believe the five following persuasions:

1. That the Bible is the authoritatively inspired Word of God, and therefore the sole standard of Christian faith and practice;

2. That Christ and the Holy spirit are personally and eternally One God with the Father;
3. That the cross of Christ was a substitutionary atonement for sin, confirmed and vindicated by His bodily resurrection from death;

4. That the salvation offered to men in the Gospel is by grace alone on God's part and through faith alone on Man's part;

5. That all Christian doctrine has a practical end, namely, the promotion of character after the pattern of our Lord Jesus Christ.
